We Assimilate

To assimilate is to fit in. Basically it is when people do a certain not because they enjoy but becasue others do it also. Feathers, they became a popular accessory for girls but most of the girls who wore them never would have got them before they came in style. There are a lot of examplesof assimilation. I have even assimilated. When i was younger my friends would do this ghetto hand thing and I thought it was the ugliest thing ever to do. Since everyone was doing it and I didn't want to look like an outcast I started doing it, feeling real dumb. Everyone has assimilated atleast once intheir life.

In "A Raisin In The Sun" Ruth doesn't want to accept who she is. She has no pride for herself. Her life stinks to her because she is poor and black. Ruth would love to have the chance to not have to worry about money. Ruth shows assimilation, all she wants to fit in, not wanting to accept the way her life is.

When Eric Liu came to America he felt outcasted. After a year he assimilated his life style to the American ways. He adjusted to new eating habbits and culture. He was ashamed of his culture and wanted to forget about it. At the end he becomes aware of the assimilation and is upset that he couldn't accept that he could keep his culture and gain more knowledge from others.
